Join Our Volunteer Community!
Our organization is dedicated to fostering a community of compassionate and conservation-oriented people. We believe the most effective way to initiate this partnership with our community is by welcoming individuals like you to join us. By leading through example, we provide compassionate care to wildlife in need, and we invite you to contribute to this vital mission. Not only will you be helping birds in need, but you will both broaden your skill set and continue your professional development with the multiple opportunities that we offer. Below is an outline of our volunteer on-boarding process.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Songbird Program: From the tiniest hummingbird to the chattiest robin, caring for songbirds is both a challenge and a joy. Volunteers in this program help raise orphaned and injured songbirds—from blind nestlings to fully fledged adults ready for release. You’ll learn species identification, natural history, and husbandry techniques including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring development.
- Dove and Pigeon Program: Doves and pigeons may be common, but their care is anything but ordinary. Volunteers in this program provide daily husbandry for both adult and baby columbids. You’ll learn tube feeding, medication administration, disease monitoring, and how to assess release readiness.
- Raptor Program: Whether you soar like a hawk or glide like an owl, the Raptor Program offers a thrilling opportunity to work with birds of prey. Volunteers care for both juvenile and adult raptors, assist with blind feeding, and support physical therapy and rehabilitation. Be prepared to handle and prepare diets that include frozen-thawed prey items such as mice, rats, and quail.
- Conditioning and Release Program: Think you’re ready to help birds take flight? This advanced program is for experienced volunteers who have completed either the Songbird or Raptor programs. You’ll help prepare birds for release through creance flying, weathering, and teaching natural foraging or hunting behaviors. You’ll also assess body condition, evaluate release sites, and—best of all—participate in actual wildlife releases.
- Education and Outreach Program: If you love wildlife and enjoy sharing that passion with others, this is your stage! Volunteers in this program work with ambassador animals and biofacts to educate the public about wildlife conservation. You’ll learn how to handle animals, care for educational materials, and present programs to audiences of all ages.
- Bird Care Assistant: We love animals—but we love our people too! Experienced volunteers are invited to mentor new recruits, helping them grow in skill and confidence. Mentors work closely with staff and leadership to shape the volunteer experience and support others in reaching key milestones.
- Clinic Support: Help with cleaning, laundry, dishes, and restocking supplies. This position is best for anyone who wants to help out, but doesn't want direct contact with animals.
- Transporters: Assist with the safe capture and transport of wildlife to the clinic.
- Wildlife Hotline & Front Desk: Answer phones, greet the public, and take patient histories. Ideal for those who enjoy helping people help wildlife.
